Ok, I wanted to write about Snowbird earlier but I just forgot (stupid!). Few days ago Simon Raymonde talked about Snowbird on the Bella Union blog (read it here). As you know he was Cocteau Twins’ bassist (1984-1997) and is founder and owner of the Bella Union record label. Back in 2006 he heard Stephanie Dosen’s music and they worked together on her 2007 release A Lily For The Spectre. Although they live together now, they had no time to record their first album until Stephanie went to the USA for a short time. This sounds kind of weird but if you read the whole story over at Bella Union’s you will understand how they managed to record their first songs – I won’t tell the same story twice, so head over and read it.
After 12 days they had enough tracks for their planned first tour and one of them can be heard and watched in the video at the end of this post. How can one describe it? First of all it’s what you call minimalistic. Simon plays the piano and Stephanie sings with her angel like voice, some birds singing in the background. That’s all. But you can not imagine how beautiful the result is – from the first moment I heard We Carry White Mice I totally was in love with the music and its unbelievable elegance.
On Snowbird’s MySpace you can find another song called Where Foxes Hide and, you guess it, it is as good as We Carry White Mice but comes with a more polished sound and additional acoustic guitar play. It’s hard for me to tell which one I like more, but honestly I think the whole lo-fi sound of We Carry White Mice is just so mysterious and magical I have to pick this one. I bet their first full length release will be fantastic…and I can’t wait for it.
