Trees Hate Everything – Cardiac Rest EP

I hope you are in the mood for some chilled acoustic folk. This time it’s Josie from Richland/New York and her first EP Cardiac Rest. Her project Trees Hate Everything was born back in 2007 because of the “frustration of the low-quality music she was exposed to.” Her music itself is very calm and inconspicuous because most of the time she plays her steel string guitar and sings the vocals. The sound of the guitar is not always as present as her singing giving a rather lo-fi character to the EP. This beeing said you should have a first picture of the release.
The tracks themselves are sweet as sugar and highly ethereous. There are some moments in them which brake out of the concept, for example in The Things, Oh So Familiar! with it’s distorted percussions and drums at the end. I would not say that was the best thing they have done but I have to grant that it could be much worse. In the end those little experiments are absolutely no reason for not loving this cute six track EP and again I have the feeling Josie will be releasing great music in the future.

As I said etherous you maybe thought of bands like Haruko but this would not quite fit here. Firstly because Josie is not a finger picker and secondly she does not reach those eternal spheres of ease and mystery Haruko does. And this is not necessarily a negative aspect but it clearly distinguishes both artists. But for it is not the goal to copy one another the Cardiac Rest EP is a really, really good first release you can spend some very good times with.
To get the EP easily donwnload it from Acoustic Firework Records and be happy. Again and again it is a great feeling to find such good music for free and I am really thankful for it. I hope this nice small german netlabel will provide more great folk music and I wish both Josie and the label all the best for the future. hi, thanks for the positive review, it means a lot to us
best
nils and sophia
Thank you so much for the review!
Josie’s music makes me feel. Listening to her makes me want to stop whatever I’m doing, put my feet up, and relax into her music. I’m not a music critic – I don’t know the qualities or technicalities of it – I just know that I like her voice and her music. It brings me to a place I like to be.
Listened and can’t recall a bigger waste of time in my recent past. I had hope that your sample song was just a bad choice and others would be better, but she writes the same obnoxious mediocre song again and again like she’s never felt a thing in her life. A dumbed down soulless version of many good artists. Ruins your credibility to promote things so unspectacular when such good music exists out there, put in some work and dig for something worthwhile.
This is wonderful music. Very real. I can’t believe anyone would leave such a rude comment about it. If you don’t like the music, don’t listen to it, and if you don’t have anything constructive to say, don’t say anything at all. This artist is obviously not a big star, or the music wouldn’t be here for free. She is probably just starting out and could use encouragement and constructive criticism. I enjoyed listening to it. Thank you to Common Folk Meadow for giving the common folk a place to play.
Thanks, Sunny, for the nice comment. I always think, that it’s very important for a blog to be a platform for young bands and that is, what I want to be – and I don’t make differences between established bands or a guy or a girl who recorded their first songs. As long as I feel, that the music got real feeling in it, I’m happy to write about it.
And to JMotts’ comment: I’m glad he posted his opinion, because I totally support free speech. And I don’t see the difference between someone saying he dislikes the music and a simple “great music”-comment. I’m glad I got a mixed audience. Also JMotts’ comment is not just a hate comment but his personal attitude and so I’m happy he decided to share his thoughts. It’s only natural that not all music speaks to everyone.
So long, I hope you all have a good time

Very nice. Very real. I like it!
I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but I dont know how to ask without sounding like a jerk so ill just say it. [...]

I guarantee free speech on CFM, but don’t support e-mobbing. Please consider this before posting again!
What does e-mobbing mean? I was confused and wanted an answer and asked as nicely as anyone could, I tryed asking my boyfriend and his friends that were over and they couldnt figure it out either. Im really mad a person cant even ask a question with out this crazy insensitivity to me and oversensitivity about what im saying so whatever.
Hi Chris,
please don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful for every comment and I highly appreciate discussions of every kind. But to aks question about the medical record of an artist I featured here, to an audience that doesn’t know the answer to the question, gives room for wild speculations.
And we, I think you agree here, don’t want insubstantial arguments that may end in a very wrong direction. So, if you really want to know the truth, your only possibility is to ask the artist directly, not via a comment on an external music blog. I hope you agree here. Because this is the only person in the world who can, if willing!, answer your question (or rightfully deny to answer it, or even to rightfully lie about it).
So no other human being (excluding legal issues, but that is totally not the case here) can provide safe information on this topic. I censored your comment, because I don’t want people to guess about a topic for which there are no answers to find. And I don’t want to judge people by means of such highly speculative terms like e. g. appearance.
So, if I read comments like yours, I could think that you want to draw attention to a fact, nobody can know of – and such guessed facts could be interpreted by an audience as a negative feature of the person. And this would be near to libel. And because this, if(!) it would happen, would happen in an electronic enviroment, the internet, I called it e-mobbing.
I hope you agree on all those points and I also hope that you see, that this is a place to (hopefully) find some new music, not to dig into other’s personal lifes.

orange- Wow ok i disagree and feel like youare using me to make weirdness and intrigue around this girl in some kind of publicity stunt because she cant get enough interest on the merit of her music and i dont know how one question is mobbing. I was not asking for medical records at all and I so do not care about her personal life!!! it was a simple question that i asked here because the people telling her good job seemed like they were people who know her and i didnt thinkit was something no one could know of, it seems like it would simply be common knowledge and i thought id get a yes and be like ok cool i get it or id get a no and feel a little like an idiot and wonder what is with people. No big deal. or you could just say you dont know if you dont know but if you dont know than i dont get what all this is about and you just seem like the one causing speculation by making a big deal out of it and not letting anyone answer me.
Im also offended by you implying that people have something to hide or a gross secret to lie about or something but if something is the way you were born than their is nothing to be ashamed of and they should be proud because of the obstacles they have overcome. My big brother has ds and he will always live at home and he works bagging groceries and he is wonderful and im proud of him. But in this situation its almost insulting for people to say she is good because its like you are saying this is good for you and you are almost jut lieing and no one wants pity that just takes away pride.
Ill just ask the guy i go to college with who is a fan of her fb page that was suggested to me and how i ended up here and im sure he will give me a straight answer because he has nothing to gain form it. i dont even care enough that i should be writing all this but things got crazy here and i feel like im the one being abused. My question was not a put down of any kind and i dont like the music either way but i do wish this girl the best either way and even you to even though i think your crazy and i will be out of here.
Holy something…that thing is going out of control…let me put it short: I don’t use you or anything you wrote for anything. I don’t imply the things you mentioned (saying I would is otherwise an insult on me). I don’t have the answer to your question – how should I. You think I’m crazy, well, think again. And please talk about music here, this is a MUSIC blog.
What a fascinating thread.
Well thank you “orange” for focusing the content of your blog back to it’s original intent, and also for attempting to maintain a dignified sense of dialogue in your allowance of offensive or questionable content – but I am completely against censorship. I’m not voicing a complaint right now, just cynically “wasting time” again. Ha.
To you dear “Chris” I am sympathetic to your poor uneducated sense of speech and grammar. ( I suppose we can only blame our rapidly dissolving school systems and lack of literary interests.) As for your question, I can sort of gather what might have been asked; however, I will not at this time disclose any “medical” information. I’m not a retard in the clinical sense of the word, just a little depressed. (Although JMotts would disagree there. Depressed people who have “never felt anything” are simply not a plausible species.)
In closing, this response is a boring, drawn-out slam to everything the world has to offer… Quite like my music.
I live in a very small town with little prospects. Before I started attending college I wasted my time with music because the fly population dropped significantly, thus my nightly swatting hobby became very droll.
I don’t think your music was or is a waste of time. You have a lovely style.
People’s personal lives should never be left out of discussions, music or otherwise. Its not different from anyone else who makes something creative or manufactured. If you find out a company is using child laborers to manufacture shirts even if the shirts seem nice you shouldn’t by them or support the company and you SHOULD tell others about the situation, not just respect the company’s decision to operate however they want. It would be absurd to say you should only discuss the shirts and what you like about them and say someone is a jerk if they say anything else! When it comes to music I wouldnt want to be a fan of anyone who had done horrible things no matter what the music is like and it is always inappropriate to move on without giving some light to the truth. Obviously this woman wants the conversation to stick to the music because there is alot that should be being said about her being the most selfish thing ive witnessed. I won’t speak for them, but i think its wrong of all the guys I know who have been involved with her to keep so quiet while she tells lies and leaves destroyed families in her wake like its nothing. I’m in the middle hearing through people from bothsides of all these messes and if every one knew this woman’s secrets there’d be a witch hunt which might be for the best. Our county has been a safer place with her at college, i hope she doesn’t flunk out.
Thanks for your comment too, Baggy. Just to clarify things: to speak about people is ok with me, I just want a nice and friendly tone here on CFM. I think every human being has its wrongs and rights – but my blog should’n be the place to discuss them, for it is a music blog. I see your point that one can’t seperate the music and the artist in an absolute way (according to your t-shirt example), but I’m more interested in the output (I don’t think child labor is supportable in any way, but you can still tell if the final product looks well, has high quality etc.) So I repeat myself here: discuss whatever you want, talk about whatever you want, but please keep in mind that this is a music blog.

wtf?! ok first of all why are ppl asking about mental handicaps???? and even weirder why are people saying witch hunts and hating and bringing up artists past are ok?!?! these things are NOT OK. i dont care what the f*** you do if your good. michel jackson wasnt a saint thats for sure
Well, “Baggy,” it seems to me that you have some “baggage” that you should be getting professional help for. Thanks for creating the controversy, though – it always helps for getting music out there, and I’m sure you can be glad to know that you’ve given the Trees some fertilizer to grow on.
I, personally, enjoy Trees Hate Everything for all that it is – I can listen to hours of her music and not get bored. I agree that music should be the point of discussion here, so let’s keep it simple, folks.
LOL! Nice comment “Josephine”. Id have to agree with a lot of this negativity. I agree that an artist’s character is always open for discussion as it is first and foremost more important than the music itself and music should not be judged with out it. On first listen this music seemed an unfailingly selfimportant whiny attempt at getting attention. But on further reading of her comment it seems she is also all that plus condescending and bitchy outside the musical realm. How could anyone support this waste of music and breath? While looking at her pages hoping to see what those defending her and my acquaintances who have liked her page see in her, all I could find were tons of just barely on the ok side of suggestive photographs, the quantity of which screams conceded. I am of course not naive enough to think that can’t take a girl far. Seems as though this woman has a lot to be ashamed of.
thankyou!!!!!!! holy shit this girl sucks ass!
You know what, Bridgett? You might be right! Maybe next time I watch War of the Worlds, I should talk about how many wives Tom Cruise has had before discussing the content of the movie with my friends. That, or what Steven Spielburg was wearing last time he walked down the red carpet – it really is important in deciding whether or not the movie is good, right? Movies and music are both an art form, so we might as well judge them the same.
….but really, I care about that just about as much as I do the fact that Jackson Pollock was a thundering drunk. He made cool paintings, and I look at them because they are cool. So what if he spilled a beer or two on the painting before he puked all over it?
Dealing with people’s personal lives only matters when you know them personally, or something like if you have some weird obsession with Jay Leno and feel like reading a biography to find out what he likes to eat for breakfast.
Seriously…get a life, lady. That or go find some music written by Jesus, since we know he lived a pure life.
go wipe your ass
Thanks Therapist. Perhaps you should, or perhaps you’ve only told me again you have bad taste, either way its fairly inconsequential. What is more disturbing is how you’re obviously sleeping with her so please get over yourselves. I had no idea who this Trees was or what I was getting into until last week when I spoke with friends from back home and heard just how many of you had been and are involved with her to so many degrees of disgustingness. This lady’s been putting in some long hard hours. I won’t apologize for choosing to look for quality AND integrity, and not on the shallow levels you’ve described to me, even in every form of art and those who produce it while the rest of the world, or your friends specifically, can live with themselves while setting it aside. You’re telling me “so what if she hurts people, shes hot!” Lol! Just think up more excuses about why nothing she does is her fault and tell yourself its OK, she is good, and keep praying. I wish I could have saved some keystrokes and said “go wipe your ass”, but I guess I don’t have villanjOO’s class. lol Good luck Therapist.
I use my real name because I have nothing to be ashamed of.
As far as I am aware, I am not now nor have I ever been sleeping with anyone. But in a small town rumors are what we bugs feed on I suppose.
I believe if you knew the truth about which you speak, you would feel very VERY differently. But you have no way to know the truth. Primarily because everyone chooses who to believe and why they believe them. I am a complete stranger. I do empathize – If the rumors about Lewis Carroll were true, I probably would never read Alice in Wonderland again!
The fact is, slander (or basic defamation of character in this case) isn’t the best past time.
And please if anything, stop addressing teenagers as “Lady”.
If you would like to harass me in person, it sounds like you’ll have to get in line.
