The next new band alert within two days. Although new seems not to be the right word in this context because Christopher McFetridge from Dallas, Oregon, already relesead two DIY Eps and one DIY full-length double-CD album called The Giving Back. His most recent output is a free seven track EP titled What You Heard Vol. 1.
Christopher was inspired by his father, a guitarist, to sing songs and so he startet playing the guitar at the age of 15 due to personal issues. He sees himself influenced by Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, Mount Eerie and The Mountain Goats – just to name a few. I think this sort of describes the music. As I first heard the EP I got another association: Me, as a really big fan of Yo La Tengo, had to think of the track Last Days Of Disco from their 2000 release …And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. I consider this one of my favourite YLT tracks because of its indescribable atmosphere especially in connection with the incredible album artwork.

But everybody knows that YLT are not quite what you would call a folk band, I know. And here Christopher McFetridge comes walking in. He manages to capture the above mentioned atmosphere and combines it with modern folk music. I’m taken aback how beautiful this result is. His guitar playing is just amazingly emotional and so is his voice. In addition to the drums, which are present at every moment, I would call the style of Chrisopher’s music psychedelic indie folk. The cover artwork for this EP totally catches the atmosphere I’m talking about.
If you want to add another great EP of 2009 to your collection, don’t wait and download What You Heard Vol. 1 from here. Also visit Christopher McFetridge’s MySpace site for more information (and for ordering physical copies of his music); on his Last.fm page you can accessorily find the unreleased Brown Recluse EP for free download. As Christopher says, there is another EP called Hello Hope on its way and there will also be a second album in the near future called Simple. Great news, I would say, great news.
