Within the next days I will review the releases from Gold and Silver Recordings, a small folk label from Germany. Maybe you remember them because of the free Haruko – Live EP or the free Stable Session EP. As I’m from Germany too, I’m really proud of them and I think they got really great music you should listen to. The label was founded by Hlynur Gudjonsson and Haruko and it’s a platform for folk artists to play shows in Germany and/or to release their music.
But let’s start with their first release: It’s Live At Folk artNOW! by Hlynur Gudjonsson himself. The tracks were recorded live between 11/28/08 and 12/12/08 and really got a nice sound. If there was no applause you could think it is a very good homemade record.

Gudjonsson refers to his own music as sad folk and I can underline that because he creates a very dark and somber atmosphere. As he plays his acoustic guitar it seems that he really got a talent for writing soulful melodies which perfectly fit the topic of the story he tells with his downfallen and doleful voice. His music appears to come very straight from the heart and it got lots of depth in it.
To describe the style of Live At Folk artNOW! I would say it’s a mix of blues and country influenced acoustic singer-songwriter music with it’s roots deeply buried in what you could call modern American folk music. Summarized: it’s the music I love and I could listen to all day long. Pure and sentimental, fragile and amazing. If you are looking for fine acoustic folk and you are also a minimalist in the way that you think there’s nothing more intimate than a solo artist and just its guitar, this is something you want.
If you like the music, please visit Hlynur’s MySpace site and order a copy of the album, also check out his personal website and the other releases at Gold and Silver Recordings.
